Educational Opportunities Residents of the Yadkin Valley have a wealth of educational opportunities from which to choose, depending on age and interest. The Yadkin Valley is home to four public school systems all within a short drive of the Elkin/Jonesville area. It is also home to Surry Community College , which offers an associate degree program as well as continuing education in a variety of disciplines. The Northwestern Regional Public Library is headquartered in the heart of the Yadkin Valley and serves libraries in numerous surrounding counties. Finally, just a 40 minute drive to the east is the city of Winston-Salem , home of Wake Forest University , Salem College , Winston-Salem State University , and Forsyth Technical Community College . Healthcare Services Serving as a regional healthcare center for the Yadkin Valley , Elkin , NC is the home to Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital (HCM) and a myriad of medical service providers offering some of medicine’s most advanced care in a primary care setting. HCMH, licensed for 222 beds, provides a continuum of healthcare services from birthing facilities and acute care services to a hospital affiliated retirement community, nursing center, Alzheimer’s center, and home health and hospice services. HCMH is a privately owned, nonprofit community hospital governed by a local volunteer Board of Trustees. The hospital offers a full range of both primary and specialty services and providers, including, family medicine, internal medicine, cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, hematology, oncology, obstetrics/gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopedic surgery, otolaryngology, and urology. Currently, HCMH is in the final phase of a three-year $18.9 million venture to upgrade the hospital’s surgery and radiology departments. These expanded departments will make available to the Yadkin Valley state-of-the-art technology, equipment, and services to insure that each patient receives the highest quality medical care available in a community based setting.
